Design Project – Animal Totem
This project is an exploration of using Graphic Design principles to create an iconic image. In many Native American tribes they believed that each individual has an animal totem or animal spirit that accompanies them through life and guides them. Using a pre-planning sheet, students were asked to think about what animal would embody them.

Students had to brainstorm, decide on an animal, write a brief description, and create a related Pinterest board. Students furthered their knowledge of Adobe Illustrator using prepared screencast tutorials, and explored how to translate an image and essence into a graphic image. This was coupled with a class critique where students had were asked to use Visible Thinking techniques to provide their feedback to their fellow students. The final part of the project was a student and teacher assessment via the Design Scoring Rubric.
