Photography Project – Creative Self-Portrait

Student Work Example

Project Description

In the third unit of the photography course students explored the idea of lighting and setting up a simple one light studio lighting with reflectors in conjunction with the theme of “Identity”. The class explored the topic of identity through the lens of artists Nikki S. Lee and Cindy Sherman. Students were introduced to the basics of a one light setup and the use of reflectors. The project challenge was to make their own creative Self-Portrait with the aid of Adobe Photoshop.

Project Steps

After the activity, class continued with a presentation about the idea of a self-portrait which included two videos and discussions about the artists Nikki S. Lee and Cindy Sherman. We then looked at the Pinterest board I created and discussed creative techniques. Students then worked on their Creative Self-Portrait Brainstorming and Pinterest inspiration board. Students had to watch the lighting tutorials and at the start of the next class we did a hands on lighting tutorial. Students then tried out using the lights and backdrops, explored photography, and work on their project. Project ended with a class critique and feedback session.
