Design Project: Creating a Concept

Students are guided through the real-life design process with the creation of a concept and proposal for a publication. Each student creates a comprehensive Design Guide for their concept which includes a creative brief, mood board, color palette, typography palette, graphic elements, and a cover. Each student shares their work and participates in a peer-to-peer PQP (Praise Question Polish) constructive feedback session.

Design Project: Birthday Card in the Style of…

In this assignment students were continuing their learning about Adobe Illustrator, the shapes & manipulation tools and the history of Graphic Design. Students were tasked with creating a Pinterest board with at least 15 examples from their given Graphic Design era or style and design examples using this style, writing a brief description, coming up with descriptive adjectives, creating a Birthday Card using their style or era as inspiration, and then presenting their research and card to the class for a critique.

Design Project: Magazine Mockup

This project began with a an exploration of what a typeface palette is, typography guidelines, and general verbiage in design. Students were tasked with creating a biography article mockup layout where they were learning how to set up a basic page spread layout with InDesign using lorem ipsum (aka mockup text) in combination with photographs. Students partnered up and interviewed their partner who became their “subject.” They then were instructed to utilize their knowledge of graphic design & typography to create a typeface palette and a appealing layout that represented their “subject.”

Design Project: Get Positive (and a Bit Negative) Poster

Students created a poster that dealt with form and design elements. Students choose one main principle and one element to concentrate on and two sheets of different colored paper to create their poster.

Students pinned their work to a wall with a post-it above that stated their principle and element. The whole class then had a gallery walk where they had to respond to the work and title the piece to capture the feeling it evokes for them as viewers.

Design Project: Design Lab Poster

Students created a poster for our re-branded classroom, “The Design Lab”. This was their first foray into using Adobe Illustrator. The goal of this assignment was for student to begin using the design principles, get familiar with working in a digital environment, try new ideas and play around with the creative process.
